Course Description
Welcome to 6th grade ELAR! Our focus this year will be learning and developing our skills as critical thinkers, readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. The development and mastery of these important literary skills is not only  important to achieving success in the classroom, it is a critical component of achieving success in other school subjects, building strong relationships with others, and attaining a flourishing career as an adult. Basically, the quality of life you experience now through adulthood will depend a lot on how well you read, write, and communicate with others.

What happens if I turn in an assignment late?
Work not completed and turned in by the assigned date is considered late. It will only be accepted until graded papers are returned. COMPLETED LATE WORK will only receive partial credit (maximum of 70% of the assignment total).

How will I check my grade in class?
Parents and students are strongly encouraged to check the Parent Portal on a weekly basis to view the most current grades for EVERY class.

What do I do if I am absent?
A student has one day for each day they were absent to turn in any work assigned on a day the student was absent. If a quiz was administered on a day a student was absent, arrangements must be made to take the quiz as soon as possible. If previously assigned work was due on the day of the absence, the work is due on the first day the student returns, otherwise, it is considered late and will only receive a maximum of 70% credit. Some assignments, such as projects, that were assigned well in advance may still be due if they are to be turned in online. Students are expected to check Google Classroom for notes, handouts, and assignment due dates.

What will we study?
We are going to read some fantastic books about historical events and overcoming adversity. We will also become masters of the English language by learning proper grammar and sentence structure. We will exhibit that knowledge through our writing.

Are cell phones allowed in class?
Cell phones will need to be silenced and put away in your backpack or in one of the pockets I have at my desk. You are welcome to charge your phone at my desk if you bring a charging cable. Parents can reach their children through the front office in an emergency. Headphones should be removed before entering class.

What supplies will we need?
Chromebooks are a valuable tool. However, they are not the ONLY tool. Students are expected to come to class with pencils, pens, and their Chromebooks every day. Chromebooks are expected to be charged at home. They will not be charged in class. The media center has charging stations available to use in the mornings.

How are grades calculated?
Formative - 60% (classwork, quizzes, homework)
Summative - 40% (tests, projects, essays)

Am I tardy?
Students must be in the classroom when the tardy bell rings to be considered "on time." Leaving their backpacks at their desk does not count. Telling someone to tell me they are in the bathroom does not count.
